The Critical Computing implementation sector concerns the computational aspects linked to HPC, HTC, Big Data themes; it proposes and organizes activities in general projects, in order to offer infrastructure, innovative implementations and create skills for the challenges of the near future, in the most important projects of our institution.
The sector is divided into 2 main axes:
Axis 1: PNRR: Centro Nazionale HPC – National Center HPC, Bigdata and Quantum Computing
It involves the majority of the Structures of INAF. In particular:
It promotes the training of the new class of technologists and researchers in the field of HPC computing, towards Exascale, and Big Data management and analysis.
Axis 2: Computing infrastructures for the research
External infrastructures:
- Agreement with Cineca for the use of Leonardo and contribution to the acquisition of the new Tier 1 at the Bologna Technopole scheduled for late 2024 – Leonardo@CINECA
- Fraction of use of the new Tier 1 at the Bologna Tecnopolo expected for 2025
Internal infrastructures :
- The Pleiadi system, and (starting on 2025) a Tier 3-size system for data Storage and Archiving located at the Bologna Technopole;
- Osservatorio Astronomico di Cagliari: Computing Infrastructure connected to the upgrading of the Sardinia Radio Telescope (structure reserved for the PON-SRT).
Access to computing resources occurs through the submission of a proposal: Call for Computing Resources
