The initial organizational structure of USC VIII is represented in the image, where some reference figures for the various sectors and groups are also shown. The planning and control part is entrusted to a Technical-Scientific-Operational Committee, led by the Head of the USC (who in turn operates in agreement with the Scientific Director), and to which the coordinators of the 4 Implementation Sectors belong (see below), as well as a certain number of experts on the scientific and technological front, including some external to INAF. The Board itself is part of a broader Advisory and Support Committee, which includes a member indicated by the Board of Directors, as well as experts representing the main national INAF projects (those not already represented in the Board) for which the thematics of the USC play a key role.
Among the tasks of the Head of USC VIII, after consulting the Scientific Director and the Advisory and Support Committee, there will be the appointment of the Time & Space Allocation Committee (CAT&S) for the various computing and/or archive infrastructures as they become available.
For the implementation part, 4 main Sectors were created: Critical Computing (i.e. that calculation that requires high capacity infrastructures, which usually go beyond what is available within a single INAF Structure), Data Curation (including aspects relating to the Virtual Observatory, free access to scientific data and FAIR policies), Synergies for Research and Development (including relationships with companies) and IT Services. This last sector includes part of the activities that previously went under the generic definition of “ICT”. The latter now disappears as a separate entity in INAF, and here a heartfelt “thank you” is due to all the colleagues who have carried out “ICT” with great commitment and expertise during all the years that have passed. In the attached image you can also find the names of the coordinators of the 4 sectors, as well as a slightly more detailed, but not exhaustive, list of the activities planned for each of them.
It is understood that the organizational structure represented is not to be considered static. On the contrary: variations may be made, based on initial experience and the emergence of new needs, just as a rotation between the people mentioned in the various roles is desirable, on a time scale of 2-3 years.
It is also noted that in all 4 sectors there is an item linked to training. This is one of the cornerstones of USC VIII. Growing the expertise of the INAF community in all reference sectors is a priority objective to ensure that the members of the organisation, and in particular the younger ones, have in their hands in the coming years the “tool manual” to make the best use of the technological developments, expected to become almost indispensable to remain at the forefront of astrophysics research.

La struttura organizzativa iniziale della USC VIII è rappresentata nell’immagine, ove sono anche riportate alcune figure di riferimento per i vari settori e gruppi individuati. La parte di pianificazione e controllo è affidata ad una Giunta Tecnico-Scientifico-Operativa, guidata dal Responsabile della USC (che a sua volta opera in accordo con la Direzione Scientifica), e a cui afferiscono i responsabili dei 4 Settori Implementativi (vedere sotto), oltre che un certo numero di esperti sul fronte scientifico e tecnologico, fra cui alcuni anche esterni ad INAF. La Giunta stessa è parte di un più ampio Comitato di Consulenza e Supporto, che include un membro indicato dal Collegio dei Direttori, nonché esperti in rappresentanza dei principali progetti nazionali dell’INAF (quelli non già rappresentati in Giunta) per i quali le tematiche della USC giocano un ruolo chiave.
Fra i compiti del Responsabile della USC VIII, sentito il Direttore Scientifico e il Comitato di Consulenza e Supporto, ci sarà la nomina del Comitato di Allocazione del Tempo & Spazio (CAT&S) per le varie infrastrutture di calcolo e/o archivio via via disponibili.
Per la parte di implementazione, sono stati creati 4 Settori principali: Calcolo Critico (ossia quel calcolo che richiede infrastrutture di alta capacità, che usualmente vanno al di là di quanto disponibile all’interno di una singola Struttura INAF), Cura dei Dati (inclusi gli aspetti relativi all’Osservatorio Virtuale, al libero accesso ai dati scientifici e alle politiche FAIR), Sinergie per la Ricerca e lo Sviluppo (inclusi rapporti con aziende) e Servizi Informatici. Quest’ultimo settore include parte delle attività che andavano prima sotto la generica nomenclatura “ICT”, che scompare ora come entità a sé stante in INAF. Qui è doveroso un sentitissimo “grazie” a tutti i colleghi che hanno portato avanti l’”ICT” con grande impegno e perizia durante tutti gli anni trascorsi. Nell’immagine allegata si trovano anche i nomi dei coordinatori dei 4 settori, nonché una lista un po’ più dettagliata, ma non esaustiva, delle attività previste per ognuno di essi.
Resta inteso che la struttura organizzativa rappresentata non è da considerarsi come statica. Al contrario: potranno operarsi variazioni, basate sull’esperienza iniziale e sull’emergere di nuove necessità, così come è auspicabile una rotazione fra le persone che sono menzionate nei vari ruoli, su tempi scala di 2-3 anni.
Si nota inoltre che in tutti i 4 settori è presente una voce legata alla formazione. Questo è uno dei capisaldi della USC VIII. Crescere l’expertise della comunità INAF in tutti i settori di riferimento è un obiettivo prioritario per garantire che i membri dell’Ente, e in particolare quelli più giovani, abbiano in mano nei prossimi anni il “manuale degli attrezzi” per usare al meglio ciò che lo sviluppo tecnologico renderà quasi indispensabile per restare in prima linea nella ricerca astrofisica.
